Very few people realise that most if not all processed foods require more nutritional value to digest, absorb and eliminate than they actually deliver. Food is supposed to give you energy not take it away! Have you ever read the ingredients of products like cereal, biscuits, sauces or dessert items? Many of the items listed on the label are multi-syllable words that you can’t pronounce and look like they should be ingredients of fingernail polish or super glue.
These chemical concoctions are used to colour, stabilise, emulsify, bleach, texture, preserve, sweeten, add or cover up smells, but in the words manufacturer “flavour.” What I believe is worse is when manufactures list numbers, so you have absolutely no idea what is in the product. What are these chemicals doing to our health?
In Eric Schlosser’s book “Fast Food Nation” he lists the ingredients of a commonly used in a strawberry milkshake:
- Amyl acetate, amyl butyrate, amyl valerate, anethole, anisyl formate, benzyl acetate, benzyl isobutyrate, butyric acid, cinnamyl isobutyrate, chinnamly valerate, cognac essential oil, diacetyl, dipropyl ketone, ethyl butyrate, ethyl cinnamate, ethyl lactate, ethyl methylphenylgycidate, ethyl nitrate, ethyl propionate, ethyl valerbate, heliotropin, hydroxyphrenyl-2butunone (10% solution in alcohol), a- ionone, isobutyl butrate, lemon essential oil, maltol, 4-methylacetophenone, methyl salicylate, methyl anthranilate, methyl benzoate, methyl cinnamate, methyl heptane carbonate, methyl naphthyl ketone, methyl salicylate, mint essential oil, neroli essential oil, nerolin, neryl isobutyrate, orris butter, phenethyl alcohol, rose, rum ether, y-undecalactone, vanillin, and solvent.
And that’s just the flavouring, think about some of the other processed foods you eat, and then think about your poor liver which has to deal with these chemicals, and when your livers overworks these chemicals circulate in the blood stream, with unlimited access to the cells in your body. This can and often leads to unpleasant side effects like weight gain, skin disorders and auto-immune diseases.
